Dr. Fitzgerald currently serves as Co-Medical Director for Bucktown Open MRI, Bloomingdale Open MRI, Joliet Open MRI, South Suburban Open MRI of Orland, and Streeterville Open MRI and Open MRI of Olympia Fields.

Dr. Fitzgerald was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He attended Northwestern University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Bachelor of Art and Master of Science degrees from the Honors Program in Biology. Dr. Fitzgerald then went onto the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where he received his M.D. degree in 1984. Following a preliminary internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Fitzgerald completed a one-year fellowship in cross sectional imaging, with particular emphasis on MRI at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Fitzgerald then returned to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1990 as the Co-Director of MRI services, with an appointment as Assistant Professor of Radiology at Northwestern University Medical School.

Dr. Fitzgerald has served as both consultant and provider of orthopedic MRI services to various professional sports organizations including the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He has authored 35 scientific papers, 10 book chapters, and 60 abstracts for presentation at both national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Fitzgerald is a manuscript reviewer for the American Journal Radiology, the Journal for Magnetic Resonance and Medicine, and the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography and MR. He is a Grant Panel reviewer for the Radiological Society of North America, and site reviewer for the American College of Radiology MRI Accreditation Program.

Dr. Fitzgerald retains his clinical appointment with Northwestern University School of Medicine, and remains a recognized authority in orthopedic MRI. He is a continually invited speaker on the topic of musculoskeletal MRI for both radiology and orthopedic audiences on an international scale. Dr. Fitzgerald has extensive experience in the performance and interpretation of high-field, open, and dedicated extremity MR scanners, and is actively involved in the role and application of teleradiology and PACs to provide quality, cost-effective interpretations of MRI services remotely.
